Well think again. Sly proves you dont need a damsel in distress, a planet in peril or six different colors of bananas to collect to make a modern action-platformer; its still possible to innovate in this old genre.

The first thing that steals your attention in Sly is the games cartoon-like presentation. Each of the five worlds begins with a Sly-nar-rated animated cinema chronicling the tragic yet hilarious life story of one of a group of villains called the Fiendish Five.

The humor is straight outta the Saturday morning toons of old and doesnt end with the cinemas it continues into the game. For example, as you wander into the first of the Fiendish Fives hideouts, you hear the boss over the P. Taking a closer look at the backgrounds and you have to Sly doesnt hit you over the head with busy visuals reveals other chuckleworthy details, like the framed pictures of steaks and fire hydrants found in canine criminal Muggshots casino.

But the plot and presentation arent the only things that make this game wicked cool. The control and camera systems are both intuitive and very responsive. Gameplay is initially simple: just sneak around avoiding detection.

This means that Sly needs to go through time trying to stop him. The time travel aspect of the story is great as you go to all kinds of locations such as the ice age and medieval times. What really makes the story though is the characters. Our three main characters, Sly, Bentley, and Murry have such a great relationship that feels very real and special in this game.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is best described as a platformer, but it is more of a stealth-based platformer than an action one. In most cases, you are best at avoiding combat unless it is percent necessary. There are a few sections in the game, most notably boss fights when you have to fight.

The game though, more wants you to sneak around undetected. The levels are huge and once you unlock an area, you are free to come back to it to do more exploring and find cool items.

The gameplay is a lot of fun and for the most part, they really nailed it. Sly 2: Band of Thieves is somewhat of a deviation from the original Sly Cooper. Make no mistake, the core gameplay is still platform-centric action with a dash of stealth styling, but this time around, it's not so linear.

The original drew many comparisons to bit side-scrollers for its tight and focused gameplay, but everything's much more open this time around, and in many ways, it's conformed to what a lot of modern platform games are doing. That's not to say Sly 2: Band of Thieves is any worse for the change - far from it. It's all been done expertly, with huge, sprawling worlds that offer up a bevy of unique and engaging missions. As the title implies, Sly is no longer the lone wolf on his quest: Murray and Bentley, his two sidekicks, are now playable characters.

Not only that, but they're almost as crucial to the game as Sly himself, and both offer up a unique brand of gameplay. Murray is the hulk of the operations, and most of his missions revolve around smashing stuff, while Bentley is the brains behind it all and you'll use his many gadgets to tackle missions in a more methodical fashion.
